Marie, nicknamed “Little Red Riding Hood,” is the child of an herbalist and a merchant.  She got her nickname from the beautiful red cloak her merchant father bought for her from his travels along the Silk Road.  Mischievous and intelligent, she is considered somewhat odd among the other villagers, though she is envied for her family’s wealth and sometimes gets a big head as a result. Red is as good, kind, sweet and passive as most traditional fairy tale heroines, doing very little for herself – her mother sends her to visit her grandmother, the wolf tricks her into staying off the path and then into getting eaten.
